Brijuni National Park: The Presidential Archipelago

Brijuni National Park

Brijuni National Park is a charter location in Istria & Kvarner Gulf, a yacht charter area in Croatia.

Brijuni National Park Charter Guide

Lying just off the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, the Brijuni archipelago is a deeply exclusive, meticulously preserved cluster of fourteen islands that serves as a living monument to luxury and geopolitical history. For decades during the 20th century, this entire archipelago was closed to the public, functioning as the private summer residence of Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito. Today, it is a highly regulated National Park that allows luxury yachts to step into an environment that perfectly blends immaculate wilderness with profound historical grandeur.

A charter stop at Brijuni is an experience in elite, heavily curated maritime tourism. The islands are lush, flat, and heavily forested, entirely devoid of standard coastal development. Instead, charter guests step ashore to find roaming herds of exotic animals, impeccably preserved 1st-century Roman seaside villas, and a legendary 18-hole golf course that has hosted European royalty and Hollywood elite. It is an intensely private, highly sophisticated destination that offers a truly unique, safari-meets-antiquity atmosphere.

Brijuni National Park Navigation

Navigating the Fažana Channel separating Brijuni from the mainland is straightforward, but the maritime rules governing the archipelago are exceptionally strict. Sailing within the National Park boundaries is heavily regulated to protect the pristine marine ecosystem. Yachts must explicitly stick to designated approach channels and are entirely forbidden from exploring or anchoring around the majority of the 14 islets without prior, explicit authorization.

Brijuni National Park Anchorage

Free swinging at anchor is completely prohibited within the National Park limits. All visiting yachts must proceed directly to the main port on Veli Brijun (the largest island). Mooring here is highly secure but commands premium, elite pricing, which mandatorily includes the National Park entrance fees. The harbor provides water and power but explicitly restricts any discharge, maintaining the absolute purity of the surrounding waters.

Brijuni National Park General Information

The history of Brijuni is staggering in its depth. The coastline of Veli Brijun features Verige Bay, where charter guests can literally swim through the submerged, marble-lined ruins of a sprawling, opulent 1st-century Roman Villa Rustica. Inland, the island boasts a Byzantine castrum and a fortified Knights Templar church, highlighting its strategic importance across millennia.

The 20th-century history is equally fascinating. Tito hosted over 90 heads of state on the island, and the Safari Park was created from the exotic animals gifted to him by foreign dignitaries (including an elephant from Indira Gandhi). Guests can rent electric golf carts to quietly explore this bizarre, deeply fascinating mix of roaming zebras, Roman temples, and the remnants of Cold War diplomacy.
