Kornati National Park: The Lunar Labyrinth of the Adriatic

The Kornati National Park is the absolute, undisputed crown jewel of raw, untouched Dalmatian wilderness. Comprising 89 densely clustered, stark white islands, islets, and reefs scattered across deep sapphire waters, this archipelago looks like a sun-bleached lunar landscape that has been partially submerged. Crisscrossing the islands are hundreds of miles of suhozid, meticulously constructed dry-stone walls built entirely by hand to separate property lines and keep sheep from crossing into neighboring pastures, creating a striking geometric pattern across the hills.

Historically, the islands served as a brutal, highly isolated frontier. The ruins of the 6th-century Byzantine Tureta Fortress still stand proudly on the island of Kornat, historically used to monitor sea traffic and protect the lucrative salt trade routes.
