Murter Island: The Wooden Shipbuilding Capital and Kornati Gateway
Murter Island is a charter location in North Dalmatia, a yacht charter area in Croatia.
Murter Island Charter Guide
Murter occupies a highly strategic, incredibly important position in the Dalmatian yachting world. Connected to the mainland by a short drawbridge at the town of Tisno, Murter essentially functions as the logistical and cultural antechamber to the Kornati National Park. In fact, the residents of Murter historically owned—and still privately own—almost the entirety of the Kornati islands. This deep, unbreakable connection to the outer archipelago defines the island's fierce maritime pride and its highly bustling, deeply nautical atmosphere.
For the charter guest, Murter is a magnificent staging ground. It provides incredibly dense, high-quality maritime infrastructure and elite provisioning before venturing off-grid. But it is far more than just a transit hub. The island itself is deeply beautiful, heavily indented with spectacular, pine-fringed sandy bays and home to a globally recognized heritage of traditional wooden shipbuilding. It is a vibrant, deeply authentic island that seamlessly marries high-end yachting logistics with centuries-old maritime craftsmanship.
Murter Island Navigation
Navigating around Murter is largely protected, though the Murter Sea to the west can become choppy during strong winds. The most critical navigational chokepoint is the Tisno drawbridge, which connects the island to the mainland. The bridge opens only twice daily (usually at 09:00 and 17:00 during summer) for 30 minutes. Captains of taller vessels must precisely time their transits to pass through the narrow channel, or otherwise circumnavigate the island's northern cape.

Murter Island Anchorage
Murter is heavily fortified with excellent marinas, most notably Marina Hramina in the north, which is highly tailored to charter fleets, and Marina Betina. For swinging at anchor, the deeply indented, incredibly scenic Slanica bay offers a sandy bottom and brilliant turquoise water, though it can be busy in peak season. The deeply sheltered bay of Koširina offers a quieter, pine-shaded alternative for overnight stays.
Murter Island General Information
The village of Betina on Murter is internationally recognized as one of the last remaining bastions of traditional Mediterranean wooden shipbuilding. The village's narrow streets literally spill into small, active shipyards where master craftsmen still build the gajeta—a highly robust, traditional wooden sailing boat originally designed specifically to transport sheep and olive oil to the Kornati islands.
Murter is also renowned for its exceptionally high-quality olive oil and its robust gastronomy. The local taverns heavily feature the day's fresh catch brought in by the local fleet, focusing on deeply traditional, slow-cooked Dalmatian peka (meat and vegetables roasted under a heavy iron bell) and high-end seafood, preparing guests perfectly for the culinary isolation of the national parks.
